Vilamoura, in Portugal’s Algarve region, has long been known as a golf resort thanks to the multitude of golf courses within the area. However, there are many more things to do and see in the area than simply playing golf. Perfect if your other half is playing golf and you want to combine this with a sunshine break or if you just like the look of Vilamoura but want to have quite a few things to do and see nearby.

Stroll along the beach

The beautiful sandy beach was pretty much deserted during our May visit, despite the 30 degree temperatures. I can only assume that this was due to most people being on the golf course, but I certainly wasn’t complaining!

Play mini golf

We found the Family Golf Park one really hot day and enjoyed playing 18 holes of mini golf in a really fun complex.

There are two different 18 hole courses which are fun for adults and kids, a cafe, and an outdoor seating area.

Have delicious Thai food

We enjoyed the food so much at My Thai on the marina that we ate there twice within a week.

There was a huge choice on the menu and everything we tried was absolutely delicious. The setting at the marina is also absolutely beautiful and a table near the front of the restaurant allows for some indulgent people watching.

Play golf

So, this is an obvious one but it certainly can’t be overlooked. Golf in The Algarve is massive and it’s one of the world’s most popular destinations for golfers thanks to it’s multitude of courses, sunny weather and competitive prices.

From many hotels in the centre of Vilamoura there is a free shuttle bus service to the Oceanico golf courses which are withing 10-15 minutes of the centre.

I absolutely recommend the Victoria and the Old Course as being two of the best Oceanico courses but I’ll be reviewing some of Vilamoura’s golf courses in an upcoming post so check back for that.

Take a boat trip

There are a tonne of different boat trips that you can embark upon from Vilamoura. You can go exploring caves, ride the waves at sunset or simply take a relaxing day cruise around the coast. Perfect if you’re looking for a change of scenery and the prices are very reasonable.

Hire a car

Vilamoura is at the heart of The Algarve region and there are so many beautiful towns and cities in the region within easy distance by car. Rent a car for a day or two and check out Albufeira, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and many more places nearby.

Eat macarons

So since finding the best macarons ever in Paris (find out where here) I’ve been addicted to these little chunks of deliciousness so I was super excited to find a place that sold them in Vilamoura. Nougat tea’n is an adorable, yet trendy patisserie and tea room situated on the marina with a beautiful deck overlooking the water. The raspberry and vanilla macarons are to die for!

Have you been to Vilamoura? Do you have any more suggestions of great things to do, see and eat there?
