Visiting Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Before visiting Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as part of our cruise with MSC I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting to like this city anywhere near as much as I did.

I had simply expected to find a pretty standard touristy city with a gorgeous beach (each of the Canary Islands are blessed with stunning beaches!) and I certainly hadn’t expected to find  funky street art, adorable independent restaurants, cafes and bars and hundreds of surfers riding the waves.

The walk along the promenade at Playa de Las Canteras beach, only about a 10 minute walk from where the ship docks, is absolutely glorious and it stretches for a good few miles so it’s the perfect place to walk off some of those deserts and treats you’ll be enjoying on your cruise holiday.

The crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean on one side will be competing for your attention with the bright, bold street art that you’ll find dotted along buildings and fences along the promenade area.

This happens to be one of my favourite corny motivational quotes. Love it!

If you’re into surfing, kitesurfing or windsurfing then Las Palmas is a great place to do this. The 2013 World Surfing Championships were held here thanks to the ‘totally rad’ waves (that’s the kind of thing cool surfer people say, right?!).

If you fancy trying your hand at surfing for the first time then try out one of Las Palmas’ many surf schools for a quick lesson. Could be a really fun way to spend a day ashore!

At one end of the promenade lies the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium which I simply adored the architecture of.

If you’re feeling hungry after all that surfing (or just walking around!) then there are plenty of independent cafes and restaurants where you can fuel up. We found the colourful and adorable La Bikina Cantina which lured us in with the promise of homemade burgers.
