Why I Would Love to Go On A River Cruise

I absolutely love the idea of river cruising yet I haven’t actually been lucky enough to go on one just yet. I know people who have been on them and have raved about how wonderful they are and it really makes me want to book one to discover it for myself.

I know it would be completely different to ocean cruising on mammoth, modern cruise liners and I would actually love to explore a little river cruise ship (or do they just call them boats?) to see how different they really are.

I have this imagine of river cruising being impossibly elegant, as your ship glides along calm rivers and you get to enjoy stunning scenery most of the time you’re sailing.

One of the things I enjoy most about cruising is being able to sit on deck or on my balcony and watch the world sail by so I think river cruising would certainly appeal to me in this way.

I also really like the idea of small, intimate ships where you could really get to know some of the other people on board. I’ve come to the conclusion that I much prefer smaller ships rather than the giant behemoth cruise ships that are so popular in today’s cruising market.

I sailed upon Silversea’s ocean cruise ships last year that have between 200 and 300 passengers and found myself really enjoying the social feeling of the smaller ship. If you met someone one night you were highly likely to see them again the next day and it made it really easy to forge friendships. I ended up joining two different sets of people for dinner two nights in a row as they didn’t want me to eat alone!

I also think I’d really enjoy being able to dock right in the middle of towns along the river as the small river cruise ships are able to do. It would mean getting to the heart of the action quicker leaving you more time to explore and less time spent on shuttle buses from the port to your actual destination. Anything that gives me more time to explore a new place is perfect!

Another great benefit of river cruises that would appeal to me is the variety of new destinations that it opens up to people. It would allow me to explore places I otherwise probably wouldn’t without taking trains or hiring a car between them. I’d be much more comfortable sailing in style between destinations rather than sitting on trains, buses or in cars!
