What is the perfect amount of travel?

Well, obviously it’s going to be different for everyone. Some people like continuous travel and always being on the road. Others like to travel a few times a month and others are content with getting away a few times a year. Everyone is different, after all.

There are many factors that can influence how much you like (or would ideally like) to travel. Everyone has different life, work and personal commitments that will contribute to this. Personality will contribute in a big way too. Some people would find a life of continuous travel exhausting, anxiety-inducing and overwhelming, whereas others find this the perfect freedom lifestyle. Some might want to travel more but can’t afford it or life circumstances mean it isn’t possible.

For me, I think the perfect amount of travel is a trip every month.

I didn’t really realise this until recently when I was thinking about how much travelling I’ve done in the past few months and how much I have planned. In the last eight months, I’ve travelled somewhere at least once each month, other than in July. And for the next few months I have the same plans – travel somewhere once a month.

Not all of these trips have been out of the country to far-flung locations. In fact, quite a few of them have involved travelling in my home country of Scotland. But, travel is travel, no matter how far. It still allows me to see new places, experience new things and break out of my normal, everyday routine.

It turns out a trip (or maybe two) each month works perfectly for me.

It allows me to get away and still indulge my love of travel regularly but allows me to have a routine when I’m at home. I still get to have travel adventures and then can come home and catch up on my workload, see my friends and family and do all of the things I love to do at home. It’s basically the best of both worlds for me.

Years ago, I used to think that a continuous travel life would suit me but now I don’t think I’d enjoy it. I love being in the home that Thomas and I have bought together with our little dog Ben. I love working in my home office, cooking, hosting dinner parties and pottering around in the garden. Being so close to Glasgow is another thing I love – it’s there for days out, meals in some of the amazing restaurants and there’s so much to do and see.

A happy life for me is all about balance. The perfect balance between travel and home life and it looks like I’ve found it.
