If you read my recent monthly round-up (click here if you missed it) you’ll know my trip to Amsterdam didn’t quite go as planned. I was supposed to be flying out with 13 other ladies for my future sister-in-law’s hen celebrations for 4 days in Amsterdam.

Unfortunately, my poor dog Ben was really unwell just before the trip, so I decided to stay home with him. Thankfully I did as he got worse and was in a lot of pain that meant we took the decision to say goodbye to him and end his suffering.

The next evening, I allowed myself to be talked into booking a new flight and flying out to Amsterdam to join the rest of the girls for the remainder of the trip. I booked my flight in secret and told all the girls apart from Michelle, the bride. That meant she had no idea I was coming!

With a heavy heart I boarded the plane. I was feeling absolutely miserable after the loss of Ben, my constant companion for more than 12 years. I really felt like I should have just stayed at home instead.

Fast-forward a few hours and I was sitting inside the gorgeous apartments we’d rented in Amsterdam with all of the girls around me eagerly awaiting Michelle’s arrival.

The look on her face when she walked into the apartment to find all of us sitting with masks of my brother’s face (the groom!) was a picture. And it was absolutely priceless when she spotted my necklace, giving away the fact it was me and I’d shown up after all. Surprise!

The next few days were filled with sunshine, laughter, lots of bubbles, drinking games, walks around Amsterdam and lots of eating.

It really was the best thing to take my mind off everything and I laughed more than I have done in years. At one point I had tears of laughter rolling down my face!

And all too soon it was time to head home.

Amsterdam was the perfect tonic to make me feel better. I was reminded of what a beautiful, walkable city it is and vowed to return again in the future under better circumstances.

Have you been to Amsterdam before?
