You know those moments of travel that are so special you have to pinch yourself to make sure you’re not dreaming? The moments where you can’t believe how lucky you are to be in that situation? The moments that make you glad to be alive and wishing they could last forever? Well, I’ve had loads of them while travelling, and I wanted to share some of my favourite ones with you.
Surprise Ferrari Experience in Monaco
Just a few weeks after my 21st birthday I visited the beautiful South of France with some family and friends. One of the days we took the train to the Principality of Monaco to spend a day in the playground of the rich and famous. What I didn’t know was my parents had arranged a surprise Ferrari experience for me! What could be better for a car lover like myself than a one hour drive in a Ferrari F430 up into the hills overlooking the principality, and then returning to the famous casino square, even driving on some of the roads used in the Grand Prix. It was one of those moments that I absolutely did not want to end and I felt like a total rock star in the process!
Wild Kangaroo Spotting
When I spent some time in Australia last year I was excited when my brother told me we were going for dinner at the house of a man who lives in the Australian Outback. Having only spent time in the cities up until this point I excitedly asked if he’d have kangaroos in his garden, only to have my brother laugh at me. The joke was on him when the first thing we saw when we stepped out onto his deck to enjoy the stunning views was three wild kangaroos bouncing towards us! It was my first kangaroo sighting in Australia, and the fact that it wasn’t in a zoo or an enclosure made it all the better.
Sailing the Ria to Kotor
If you’re a regular reader here then you’ll know that I love cruise holidays, and one of my best travel experiences was sailing along the ria, which looks remarkably like a Norwegian fjord, to the adorable city of Kotor in Montenegro. The views from the top deck of the ship were absolutely breathtaking, and it was definitely one of my favourite sails ever.
Visiting St Petersburg, Russia
I had to pinch myself pretty much the whole time I was in St Petersburg, Russia. The architecture is unbelievable, the history is fascinating and it’s just such an interesting place with so much to see and do. For me, the best parts of St. Petersburg were visiting the gardens of Peterhof Palace and visiting what I think is my favourite building in the whole world – The Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood. It’s one of the most colourful, intricate building I think I’ve ever seen and I could have spent ages just looking at it.
Driving The Great Ocean Road
Another of my special travel moments happened in Australia – driving The Great Ocean Road. As a bit of a geography nerd, the coastline and the rock formations along the coast absolutely wowed me and I’ll never forget the time I spent there. The next time I’m back in Victoria I plan to spend a few weeks driving the coastline and stopping off in the cute towns and enjoying the beaches. It’s definitely not called The ‘Great’ Ocean Road for nothing!
Madeira Toboggan Ride
I visited Funchal, the capital of the beautiful island of Madeira and simply had to take part in one of the most famous things in the city – the toboggan ride down the steep streets. We started off by taking the cable car to the top of the hill and enjoyed the amazing 360 views around us. When you get to the top you can either walk down, get the cable car back down, or climb into a wicker basket and be pushed down the hill by two men. The toboggan is definitely the coolest way to get down! It was seriously fun being pushed down through the streets (pretty quickly at times!) with the wind rushing through your hair and the houses whizzing past! It was definitely an experience I’d love to repeat.
So, there you have it – some of my best travel moments. What are yours?
