What happened in April?

So, you might remember in my last monthly round-up I said my planned trip to Portugal was cancelled due to getting our new puppy, Poppy. Thomas was expected to be away with work and I was due to go to Portugal to our new timeshare with my family. We then found out Thomas wouldn’t be away with work and he generously offered to stay at home with Poppy which meant I could go to Portugal after all!

I had an amazing few days in the Portuguese sunshine and loved my first trip to my family’s new timeshare. The sun shone, we visited some of our favourite places plus a few new ones, we ate extremely well and I enjoyed some gorgeous Portuguese wines. All in all it was pretty much the perfect relaxing break.

Much of the rest of the month has been spent running around after Poppy a lot and working on her training and socialisation. She’s now 16 weeks old and is doing so well. She has loads of puppy pals, is toilet trained, sits, gives paws and is great at being left in her crate for short periods of time. She loves to play, loves to go for walkies and absolutely loves tummy rubs. She’s an absolute delight!

Other than that there have been some glorious BBQs in the sunshine, dinners and catchups with family and friends. I also managed to cram in loads of work too. Phew!

Books I read in April…

The first book I read in April was An American Marriage by Tayari Jones. Barak Obama described it as “a moving portrayal of the effects of a wrongful conviction on a young African-American couple”. It follows Celestial and Roy as Roy is wrongfully accussed of rape and assault and is imprisoned for it. I really, really wanted to love this book and, whilst I enjoyed it, I didn’t love it. I found the characters a bit difficult to bond, but the story was thought-provoking and interesting.

Then I moved onto The Perfect Girlfriend by Karen Hamilton. It’s a psychological thriller about a woman who changes her entire life in order to win back her ex-boyfriend. She becomes an air hostess for his airline, breaks into his house regularly, knows his schedule and is pretty much a full on sociopath. But, she’s also kind of likeable and I found it a good and easy read.

Third up was Only The Innocent by Rachel Abbott. I’ve read quite a few books by Abbott before and enjoyed them and this one was no exception. A man is found dead and when the police begin to look into his life to try to solve his murder it becomes clear that there’s a lot more to wealthy philanthropist Hugo than meets the eye.

My fourth book was Divided House by J M Dalgliesh, which was my least favourite read of the month. I couldn’t connect with the characters and the storyline didn’t quite grip me. It just wasn’t for me.

Last but not least was The Wicked Girls by Alex Marwood. A series of women are found brutally murdered in a seaside town and this leads to two women meeting, who knew each other years previously when they did something dark as children. Will their secret remain just that?

What’s happening in May?

We’re kicking May off with a bank holiday dinner party this weekend with some great friends. There are also a few birthdays to celebrate in May – Thomas’ and one of my best friends too. I’m sure there’ll be plenty celebrations and fun times!

Towards the end of May we’re heading to Archerfield for a long weekend with my family. Archerfield is an estate just outside of North Berwick on the east coast of Scotland. Archerfield is a special place for us as we visit several times each year and always have an amazing time together. Thomas and I are also getting married there next year, so we’ll be meeting with the events planner there to plan some of the details. Exciting!

And that’s it for another month! As always, thank you for taking the time to check in to my blog and read about all my adventures and musings. If you’re not already then please follow along on Twitter and Facebook to stay even more up to date.
