Now that autumn has well and truly arrived in Scotland, bringing some horrible weather with it, I thought I’d take the opportunity to reflect on my summer of travel. Summer 2012 has been a really busy and exciting one for me.

The sun setting on my first flight of the summer on the way to Australia…

It started way back in May when I finished my last ever exams at university and jetted off a few days later to Australia. So here’s a little look back at my summer in numbers;

  • I’ve been on 17 flights.
  • I visited 3 different continents- Australia, Europe and Asia.
  • I visited 8 different countries – Australia, France, Italy, Turkey, Montenegro, Croatia, Greece, and Spain.

My Favourite Place

This one is tough. I’ve been to some absolutely amazing places this summer and it’s hard to pick just one favourite. I really fell in love with the natural beauty of Kotor, Montenegro. I sailed down the bay of Kotor and it was one of the most stunning sails of my life, and a perfect way to arrive into Kotor.

Isn’t this gorgeous?!

Place I Most Want to Return to

This one is easy. I’m desperate to go back to Bologna in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy. I only got to spend around 14 hours exploring the city and it definitely wasn’t enough. I fell head over heels with Bologna and the feeling it gave me.

Places that Most Surprised Me

I was really happy to discover that Rimini, Italy wasn’t what I expected it would be at all. I’d heard from numerous people that it was just a beach and party town, and whilst that’s definitely one side of it, there’s also another side that is historic, charming and truly beautiful. It surprised me and I had a great time there.

But it hasn’t all been perfect…

  • I had my iPhone stolen within a few hours of arriving in Lanzarote for a relaxing holiday with my friends. Thank goodness for travel insurance!
  • I missed out on visiting Africa for the first time. As part of my cruise on-board Holland America’s MS Ryndam, we were to visit Tunisia, but the captain had to cancel the scheduled visit due to political unrest. Africa will have to wait!

2012 has been the best summer of my life (so far!). It was the summer I graduated from university and moved from the bubble of studying, exams and, let’s be honest, a shed load of partying, into the big, bad world. I’ve met some amazing people and had some of the best trips ever.
