Post-travel blues. We’ve all been there.

I’m sure all of us know the sinking feeling of returning home after an incredible trip feeling a little sad to be back to reality. You know you’re going to have to get back to your everyday routine, back to work, back to paying bills, running errands and cleaning your home. And, quite frankly, it sucks.

I know in my case I’m always a bit sad when I come home from trips, although there are a few things I love about returning home.

Travel is one of the most exciting, wonderful, immersive and life-changing things most people do with their lives, so coming back to normality can be really hard. You might find you miss the place you were, yearn for the lovely people you met there, or even just desire to be back in a place that makes you feel more alive. Heck, the only thing you might be feeling rubbish about is that you know you’re back to work tomorrow and you’re just not ready yet.

I have a few little things I always try to do before I leave, to make returning home a little easier, and they might just help you too…

Clean the house

This probably sounds a little strange and you might be wondering why I’d clean my house when I’m about to lock the door and leave it behind for a few days or weeks. Think about it though. It means when you come back from your trip your house is clean, fresh and pristine, so you don’t need to arrive back to piles of dishes in the sink, half your wardrobe strewn across the floor from when you couldn’t decide what to pack and general chaos and disorder.

Arriving back to a home that’s clean will always feel more welcoming than coming back to a proverbial pig sty. It’ll help you ease more gently back into your routine and all you’ll have to worry about is unpacking, washing and organising your things.

Clear the washing pile

Before I leave for any trip I always get all of my washing and ironing done, so that when I return with a suitcase full of dirty clothes I’m not adding them to an existing pile of clothes that need washed.

This means there’s less washing, drying and ironing to do and more time to relax and get used to being back home and back to everyday life.

Plan something exciting

I always like to have something fun planned for when I get home from a trip, to ease myself back into normal life gently and in a fun way.

This doesn’t have to be anything mind-blowing, and can be as simple as meeting the girls for dinner, planning a day out with your best friend or planning another trip if you’re missing travel that much!

Anything that makes you smile, makes you feel alive and lights you up is absolutely worth planning for shortly after your return, so that you don’t get bogged down in the drudge of being back home after an incredible trip.

What little things do you do to help ease the pain of returning from a trip?
