Hiring a car in the south of France was absolutely one of the best things we did on our trip there.

Thomas was the one who came up with the idea, so I let him pick the car. After all, he was the one who would be doing the driving! We had just decided on the spur of the moment to hire a car, so there weren’t many great options available.

Thomas opted for a convertible mini, after deciding it *had* to be a convertible. Of course, we ended up with the brightest orange mini that meant nobody could miss us on the roads. I was kind of hoping for a more incognito black shade!

We picked up our car in Juan les Pins, where we stayed during our trip. From there we drove all the way along the coast, through small towns, the city of Nice and past gorgeous beaches.

We found ourselves stopping often to get out the car and admire the views and grab some pictures. The views all the way along the coast were nothing short of incredible. I’m not quite sure how Thomas managed to keep his eyes on the road most of the time!

Zipping around the windy roads was so much fun! Our mini was small enough to hug the corners and go up tight roads without worry, but powerful enough to nip around quickly.

Thomas had a hankering to drive around part of the F1 circuit in Monaco (pretty sure that’s why we hired the car in the first place!). So we made our way to Monaco, put the top down and indulged his wish.

He absolutely loved it! Especially driving round the famous hairpin bend, although I’m sure doing it in a Mini wasn’t quite how he had envisioned it.

As we made our way back to Juan les Pins at the end of the day I was kind of sad to say goodbye to our little Mini. I usually love travelling around the south of France using the trains, but it was nice to be able to go at our own pace rather than sticking to train timetables. We could stop where we wanted, pull over to admire the views anytime and just do everything on our terms.

Having the wind in our hair and the sun on our faces whilst we drove through some of the prettiest places on the coast was the perfect way to spend a day.

Have you hired a car abroad before? Have you thought about hiring a car in the south of France?
