Last year my parents, my brother Iain, his girlfriend Michelle, my partner Thomas and I had the most amazing villa holiday in Sorrento, Italy. No exaggeration whatsoever. It was perfection from start to finish. We stayed in a gorgeous three-bedroom villa with views out to sea, a huge pool, beautiful gardens and so much space. It couldn’t have been better and we all still talk about it often.
Recently, we started talking about perhaps going back next year to the same villa. I was all (and still am) for it, but Thomas said he was a tad worried. What if it wasn’t as good the second time around? Our first visit was literally perfect, so what if we returned and it wasn’t as good?
So I started researching some alternative locations. We’re a rather picky bunch so it has to be somewhere with plenty to do really nearby. We want the option of jumping on a bus/boat/train for a day out, but also the option of relaxing by our very own private pool. We want to be near great restaurants and some fun bars and to be able to take great walks to explore. That’s not too much to ask, right?!
Here are the Europe villa holiday destinations we’re considering…
I love Portugal and never get tired of spending time there. Luckily, my family are pretty keen on it too.
I visited Cascais for a few hours during a day trip from Lisbon a number of years ago. It’s around 30 kilometres from the capital on the coast and is an adorable seaside resort. It’s proximity to Lisbon means that could provide some great opportunity for days out and there are some great restaurants in Cascais itself.
I visited Marbella last year for the first time and was surprised to find a place I really enjoyed. Here in the UK Marbella has a reputation as nothing but a party town full of fake people (thanks to a certain TV programme), so I wasn’t expecting to like it all that much. I was surprised to find there was far more to Marbella than fake-tan, partying and excess. The Old Town of Marbella is quaint and cute and the beach and coastal views are to die for. There are amazing tapas bars, some great shops and plenty of interesting places to visit nearby.
Whilst Mykonos might offer fewer options for days out sightseeing, it’s certainly a lively island destination. Plus, the whole place looks like it’s straight out of a brochure it’s so darn pretty. I think Mykonos would be an amazing spot for a villa holiday and a quick Google search has just popped up with some of the most gorgeous villas I’ve ever seen!
The South of France
I love, love, LOVE the South of France and always adore visiting. There are so many fabulous and beautiful towns along the coastline to explore and I’d happily stay in a villa in any of them. I love the variety of places there are to visit along the coast – Cannes, Nice, Eze, Antibes, Juan les Pins and many, more. The food in the south of France is also delicious, the wine is some of my favourite in the world, the sun shines and the pace of life is slow. I’m sold!
I can picture a villa in an elevated position with an infinity pool looking down towards the sea…too much to ask?!
