About Me

Welcome!

Emma Gray Athens

I’m Emma. I’m 23 years old and I was born and raised in a village just outside Glasgow in beautiful Scotland.

Ever since I was just 6 months old, when my fabulous parents took me on my first flight, I’ve been filled with a deep and inescapable sense of wanderlust. Travelling is my passion. I love nothing more than packing a suitcase and travelling somewhere new and exciting whether it’s alone, with friends or with family.

In early 2012, towards the end of studying for my English Literature degree at one of the most prestigious universities in the world, I knew working 9 to 5 in an office cubicle wasn’t for me. I started Emma’s Travel Tales and begun my quest for a location independent lifestyle. What’s location independence I hear you ask – well, it’s the ability to work from anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access. I challenged myself to live life differently to what was expected of me.

When I’m not travelling abroad, exploring new cities, towns, beaches and everything in-between I love to explore everything that Scotland has to offer. Sometimes you don’t have to go too far to have an amazing experience- the best places are often on our own doorstep.

 What is my travel style?

Well, I’m not a backpacker, so you’re probably not going to read about me backpacking around Asia like the millions of other travel blogs out there. I’m not really a hostel type of girl either. I love the idea of meeting a bunch of new people, but I also really like having my own space. Plus, I’ve heard some pretty brutal stories about hostels that have been more than enough to put me off!

When I’m travelling I much prefer to spend a little more money and stay in a great hotel or apartment. Being in nice surroundings all adds to the travel experience, right?! I’m all about making the most of my money though. If there’s a bargain to be had, I’ll find it!

A few more facts about me…

  • I was born on the kitchen floor of the house my family still live in. Next to the washing machine.
  • I adore football, and could happily talk about it, and watch it for hours on end. I fervently support both a Scottish team and a Spanish team.
  • I’m an eternal optimist and it takes a lot to put me in a bad mood.
  • I adore dogs. My miniature schnauzer Ben is definitely the coolest dog in the world. He’s pretty much the main reason I don’t pack my bags and jet off forever.
  • I used to want to be a VET but I’m terrified of horses.
  • I get ridiculously excited before a trip, to the point where I generally can’t sleep the night before.
  • I love cars and one of my best experiences was when my parents surprised me with a Ferrari experience in Monaco. Best. Parents. Ever.
  • Three of my favourite places are Barcelona, the south of France and St. Petersburg.
  • I love cruise holidays. I know you probably think they’re for middle-aged couples, but pick the right destination and cruise line but you couldn’t be further from the truth!

Join me here on my blog as I share my travel experiences, photos, tips, and advice from wherever my travels take me to next. I’m busy making memories around the world.
