What do you think of travel goals? Of people setting goals to reach a certain amount of countries/cities or continents visited? Many people aren’t fans of travel goals like this, thinking it makes people rush through places all in the name of ticking them off their list, rather than really exploring and enjoying them.

For me, I’m not too sure how I feel about travel goals like this. On one hand, I can see the benefits and attractions of setting goals (I definitely do it myself), but I can totally see how some people think it’s pointless.

Thankfully, I love travel and new experiences too much to rush through a country or place just so I can tick it off a metaphorical list.
40 countries before 30

I do have a self-imposed travel goal though. It’s to reach 40 countries before I turn 30. Next month, in March, I turn 29 and I’ve realised the deadline for this goal has crept up on me rather quickly.

At present, I’ve visited 39 countries. Most of these have been in Europe, but I’ve also checked off some farther-flung destinations too. These countries have been across five different continents – Asia, Africa, North America, Europe, and Australia.

I’ve been ‘stuck’ on country number 39 for quite a while, almost a year to be exact. Bulgaria was my 39th country and I visited it last March on my first ever skiing holiday.

But, whilst I’ve been to plenty of places since visiting my 39th country last year, I haven’t actually been to any new countries. Instead, I’ve been revisiting places and countries that I already know and love.
40 countries before 30

This weekend, for example, I’m heading back to Amsterdam in The Netherlands. I’ve been lucky enough to have visited Amsterdam twice before so it’s a place I’m familiar with.

So, with just over a year until I turn 30, I’ve started wondering whether I’ll actually make it to my goal of 40 countries before 30.

Just over a year sounds like plenty of time to add a new country to my list, but I already have so much planned between now and then.
40 countries before 30

As I mentioned, I’m off to Amsterdam next week and that’s for my sister-in-law-to-be’s hen weekend with 13 other ladies! Then, next month, it’s my brother’s wedding and at the beginning of April I’m off to Portugal (again) for a week. In summer, we’re heading to Paris and the south of France and later in the year we’re off to India for almost 3 weeks. We’ve also got 4 visits to our beloved Archerfield planned in too. Add to that the fact Thomas and I are planning our own wedding for right after my 30th birthday and it’s a rather busy time!

So, I don’t know whether I’ll make it to 40 countries before 30. It seems like it would be so easy to visit one more country to make it but I’m just not sure when I’d be able to fit it in. A city break to somewhere in Europe perhaps? The trouble with that is, I’ve already visited much of Europe, especially the places I can get direct flights to from Glasgow Airport.

I’m holding out hope that I’ll make it to 40 countries before 30, but who knows?

What do you think of travel goals? Do you keep track of how many countries you’ve visited?
