You might have seen my recent post on why Portugal is one of my favourite destinations, but my latest trip there has cemented this love even further. I’m lucky enough to have visited Portugal more times than I can count and I never get tired of it. I firmly believe Portugal is one of the most perfect summer destinations in Europe, so if you need some summer holiday inspiration this is the place to be…

1. Sunshine

Summer holidays absolutely need sunshine and Portugal has it in spades. The Algarve region in the south of the country enjoys more than 3,000 hours of sunshine every single year, with around 12 hours of sunshine per day in summer. rope. The gorgeous capital, Lisbon, enjoys more hours of sunshine per year than any other capital on the continent too. Perfect!

2. SO many beaches

perfect summer destination
Portugal has more than 1,100 miles of coastline, much of which is comprised of gorgeous white sandy beaches. There are the small, secluded bays that look as though nobody has ever set foot on them, as well as the long stretches of sand line with beach umbrellas. Whatever type of beach you prefer you’ll be bound to find it in Portugal.

3. It’s easy to get around

Portugal is a really easy country to get around and hiring a car is really inexpensive. The roads aren’t too overcrowded or hard to navigate and it’s a relatively stress free experience driving there. Hiring a car is also pretty much the best way to explore pretty little seaside towns and villages, stopping off at beaches and viewpoints along the way.

4. It’s cheap

Portugal offers really amazing value for money and is one of the best budget destinations in Europe. Accommodation is inexpensive, eating out is cheap, going out for drinks doesn’t empty your purse and basically everything is just much more affordable than The UK. Your money goes much further, meaning you can have an amazing holiday at a great price.

5. The variety

perfect summer destination
There is so much variety in Portugal. There are pretty little seaside towns and villages, sprawling resorts, big, exciting cities, beautiful stretches of coastline, gorgeous inland landscapes and much more. I know it’s a cliche, but there’s basically something that will appeal to absolutely everyone in Portugal.

6. The laid-back vibe

When I go on holiday I want to feel relaxed, even if I’m busy out sightseeing and exploring. I don’t want to feel rushed or frenzied and luckily, these are words that don’t belong in the same sentence as Portugal. Especially in The Algarve in the south everyone is extremely laid-back, the atmosphere is peaceful and tranquil and everything happens at a slower pace than at home in The UK. It’s definitely something I adore when I’m there.

7. The food

Oh my, Portuguese food is tasty. With so many miles of coastline, you won’t be surprised to hear that seafood is big business in Portugal. Everywhere you go you’ll find seafood on offer that’s most likely been caught fresh that morning. Delicious!

For dessert, try some pastel de natas. These are exquisite custard tarts that are baked fresh daily and can be found all across the country.

Food is also really, really cheap across Portugal. You can eat like a king or queen for very little money. Perfect.

8. There’s plenty culture

perfect summer destination
Although Portugal does the laid-back beach vibe really well, it also has masses of history and culture too. Perfect if you want a little more from your holiday than just lounging by the pool.

Across Portugal there’s fantastic architecture, rich history, ancient castles, unique museums, wonderful fado music and dancing. There’s plenty to discover.

9. Wine!

Portuguese wine is becoming recognised around the world more and more. The Douro Valley and Alentejo regions are famous for some truly delicious wines and, of course, as it’s Portugal they’re pretty inexpensive.

10. A feeling

Most of all, I love the way Portugal makes me feel. When I’m there I’m perfectly relaxed, I feel absolutely safe, the people are wonderful and I pretty much always have a smile on my face. That’s exactly what I want from a summer holiday destination.

Do you think Portugal sounds like a perfect summer destination? Have you been before?
